Built in the Cossacks period,
St. Catherine's Church belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and is located
in the city of Chernihiv.
Lyzohub brothers – Cossacks
Iakov and Semen – donated costs for the construction of the cathedral. They
followed the last will of their father Iukhym Lyzohub, the commander of
Chernihiv. The church has been built to commemorate the valour of their grandfather
Iakov Lyzohub, who used to serve as an appointed Hetman and a commander, and to
honour the Cossacks of Chernihiv army for the courage during the assault of
Turkish fortress Azov in 1696.
Nowadays it is one of the
major landmarks of the city of Chernihiv.
